Our hearts where they rocked our cradle,

Our love where we spent our toil,

And our faith, and our hope, and our honor,

We pledge to our native soil.

God gave all men all earth to love,

But since our hearts are small,

Ordained for each one spot should prove

Beloved over all.

~Rudyard Kipling

Patriotism ..This ten letter word means different meaning for different people. The real meaning of patriotism is LOVE FOR ONE'S COUNTRY. For a soldier patriotism is something for which he can give up his life, for a player representing his country patriotism is the zeal or spirit which motivates him to play and secure laurels and awards and bring name and fame to the country, for a teacher patriotism is something which she instills in her students and make them well informed about the patriotic sacrifices done by their ancestors so that they grow up to become citizens with love and respect for their country. Patriotism is a myth is nothing but just a sheer misconception. People who believe in this have failed to realize their purpose of existence on earth. Many people have the wrong notion of patriotism . They should understand that Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong. Men love their country, not because it is great, but because it is their own. THIS IS PATRIOTISM!

People think that patriotism is only associated with a soldier dying to save his country or an army fighting to save the nation. But you should understand that it is not the definition of patriotism. Patriotism can be of any type. A patriotic person need not be a soldier or an army officer. He can be anyone.you me or him only one thing is required that is the dedication and respect for the country's virtues, values and traditions. If patriotism would have been a myth today India and many other countries would still remain colonies of British. Do you think all the people who fought for their country at that time were army or police officers? The answer is a clear NO. If we take the example of India Khudiram, Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi were none other than the common citizens of India . What drove them to mutiny was nothing but their love for the country. When the British began exploiting India and its resources then the people of India revolted against it and this flared up into a series of battle.

Lets take an example from this 21 st century too. I am sure everyone here is familiar with Leander Paes. He plays national as well as international tennis. But the way he plays in international is drastically different from the way he plays at the national. He has a different level of confidence, a different personality, a different motive while playng at the international level. A motive to bring glory to the country . A motive to make his country proud. Here patriotism is clearly visible. Do you still call it a myth? The spirit of patriotism is what keeps the human beings alive. They respect, love their mother land. A soldier dying in the battle field is not worried that he is losing his life. He is worried and upset that he was unable to help his country. A patriotic person is one who without caring about himself thinks about the country, about his land, about the people.

Such people consider every citizen as his brothers and sisters. He loves the country like he loves his own family. Calling patriotism a myth would be insulting the honour and pride of such patriots. So friends open up your thoughts, go out into the real world and see even in today's world there are many people who still have the spirit of patriotism alive in them. Stop thinking it is myth , realize its existence, stop being ignorant and salute the great patriots for their sacrifices , their love, their dedication.
